The Baby And the Empire
The last couple of weeks have been devastating. It has reminded us of the famous adage “Evil prevails when good men do nothing.” And the most vulnerable among us suffer. When leaders use their position, power, and privilege to preserve their own rights and their own lives instead of to protect and to serve others. It reminds us that we all fall for the allure of the kingdoms of this world. We are seduced by the allure of money, power, image, success, of comfort that this world tries to sell us. But what the good Dr. Luke has been showing us in the first chapter of Luke, and now with Jesus’ birth narrative, is that Jesus ushers in an upside-down kingdom.
